For many people, the price of home lawn care service is almost as important as the care their lawn receives. When you start evaluating lawn care companies, remember the old saying, “you get what you pay for.” Remember, a perfect lawn is not necessarily a cheap lawn.

There are big name companies out there like Scotts Lawn Care and Chem Lawn and several others, that can be very expensive, but they do wonderful work. They have all the top lawn care tools and lawn supplies at their disposal. They use the best fertilizer on your lawn, and they will make sure that you have a true green lawn. However there are people who don’t really care, lawn services like these are simply overkill.

There are lots and lots of smaller lawn companies out there that will provide an equivalent level of home lawn care as the big guys, but may give you a lower rate without scrimping on materials or using low quality lawn products. A great way to locate some of these smaller home lawn care services is to ask your neighbors and friends, who they use for their lawn care. A company that provides great lawn care services, with a good reputation in the neighborhood, will be promoted widely by word of mouth.

Check out your friends and neighbors grass. Ask them if they are happy with lawn care business they are dealing with. Are they satisfied with the service? Are they well treated? Do they have that perfect lawn that you wish you had on your property?

With a bit of care, lawn services shouldn’t be that hard to find. Be careful though because sometimes, lower price can mean lower quality. Get a price quote for basic lawn care service, then get a separate quote for anything extra that you may want done. Do you want some landscaping? Is it extra for lawn fertilizing? Do they user top name products like Scotts fertilizer or do they use some generic turf builder?

What about grass seed? Do they use the best grass seeds available? A reputable lawn company will be able to give you the names and product labels of all their grass seed blends, fertilizers and pest control products.

What techniques do they use to improve the health of your soil and grass. This is an important part of any home lawn care program and not all companies provide these services. Some services you would want them to include are lawn seeding, overseeding, topdressing, lawn aeration, and hand weeding. Yes, believe it or not, some of this work still needs to be done by hand!

If they don’t provide these services, perhaps they can show you how to do them on your own. Believe it or not, you need to learn how to seed grass so that you end up with a beautiful green lawn. You don’t want to kill your grass after all.

I hope that you find these questions useful when you are choosing a home lawn care company. You know you can’t afford those top of the line lawn care tools, but they will have them for you. They will have the best lawn seeds, they will have the best fertilizers and they will help you grow beautiful, perfect grass and a beautiful, perfect lawn.

Every spring lawn care companies come to your door offering to poke holes all through your lawn, leaving thousands of small, round, clods of dirt. Does aerating really help a lawn grow better and if so, why? Also, what is the best approach to lawn aeration and what do you need to do before and after aeration is complete?

Does Aerating Really Help My Lawn?

The answer is “yes”, if done properly. We will first talk about why aerating is beneficial, and then we will discuss how you can maximize the benefits of aeration.

Why Aerate My Lawn?

First, the primary reason to aerate your lawn is to promote the health of the soil under your lawn. A healthy lawn needs healthy soil underneath to supply adequate water and nutrients. Clay or sandy soils that are common in North Carolina tend to compact and limit the movement of these nutrients, or they allow them to wash right though. Aerating loosens the soil and allows new nutrients to enter the soil. High traffic areas that are prone to compacting are greatly benefited by these air pockets, which allow the ground to breath and allows the nutrients to spread evenly through the soil.

How to Aerate Properly?

There are two basic kinds of aerators; punch-core aerators, and spike aerators. Punch-core aerators are motorized with tube-like attachments that cut into the soil and remove apple core type chunks of soil from your lawn. This loosens the soil and provides all the benefits listed above. Spike aerators are less expensive and are typically pulled behind a riding lawn mower. However, spike aerators do not remove soil from the ground, but instead, they compact it further. It may have some benefit, though it does not provide the same benefit as a punch-core aerator.

When to Aerate?

Aerate your lawn at least once or twice a year for a stronger, healthier lawn. Aerating is most beneficial when done in spring or fall.

What to do Before & After Aerating?

Aerating works best if the lawn is moist, though not too wet. Typically we recommend watering your lawn 3 days in advance to loosen the soil and then allowing it to drain so that it is not muddy. Mowing your lawn on a lower setting before aerating, will allow for deeper penetration and will also make it easier to top-dress with compost. Flag any sprinkler heads to avoid damage to your irrigation system. Afterwards, do not rake up the soil cores as these will break up in a few days and will work back into your lawn. If your lawn is being renovated, you can now apply up to one inch of lightweight, fine compost, and rake it into the lawn.

A watering system has to be installed at home to make sure that our plants get their daily water requirement. There are several types of systems to choose from. It s essential that you pick the right system for your yard because this will help your plants grow. Choosing the right system will also aid you in conserving water and managing your plants.

As mentioned earlier, you can choose from the wide array of water systems. There are manual systems, while others are automatic. Although manual watering is good because you are able to control the water, it can be laborious and time consuming. Imagine carrying pails of water for your plants. Fortunately, there are systems that will make it easier. Just turn it on and wait for the garden to be watered thoroughly. Sprinklers have spray and rotors. You may also use the underground and the automatic sprinklers.

The first consideration you have to make is the type of watering your plants need. Use sprays when you want even distribution of water with low pressure. The rotor, on the other hand is a good choice if your plants need more water. The flow of water from this system is compacted. It rotates to reach farther distances. You may also want to use the underground sprinklers. This is great because they are only visible n the surface when they are used. They are kept under the ground when not needed. The installation is complex so you have to consider that as well. In addition, there is an automatic water system. This is a great choice for those who are normally busy. They can set a schedule on when it will turn on to water the plants.

It is great to have sprinklers because they make watering a breeze. However, it is still important that they be checked regularly. This is to make sure that they are in good working condition. Monitoring is also important to avoid water wastage. Wastage is unhelpful to your financial state and to the environment as well. You can avoid wastage by controlling the water pressure.

Before choosing a device, consider your lifestyle and schedule. If you are at home most of the time and you can easily find time to attend to your plants, use the sprinklers. You can turn them and monitor the flow of water. You can also adjust it to make sure that all areas are watered. However, if you do not have the luxury of time and you cannot attend to your plants regularly, use automatic water systems. Just see to it that they are in good shape to avoid leaking and water wastage.

Your plants are also very important. Plants with similar water needs should be planted next to each other. Remember, their water requirement varies, so see to it that you provide their needs.

Several water systems are available in the market today. Make sure that you are wise with your choices. After considering all the factors, check the installation and see to it that the system is in good working condition.

Many of you have spring fever and are looking forward to clearing out the old to make room for the new. The Social Committee has scheduled its Annual Community Yard Sale for Saturday, April 28 from 7AM-12 Noon. The Social Committee will take care of the advertising (Mooresville Tribune and Craig s List) while you take care of the boxing up. If you only have a few things, consider teaming up with a neighbor. The more “stuff” you have in the driveway, the more likely people will stop by to check it out. If you live in a cul-de-sac, we also recommend teaming up with a friend who lives on a street with more traffic. We want you to be successful and make some money!

The LF Egg Hunt has been rescheduled for THIS SUNDAY, April 1, at 3:30 PM (because of the rain) The hunt will still be held in the grassy area in front of the pool entrance. Children ages 0-10 can participate in the Egg Hunt and immediately following the egg hunt we will have a quick “Egg-inspired” activity for the older children ages 10 and up (great way to land some candy).

Don’t forget your baskets and cameras. The Easter Bunny will hop on by for a photo shoot with your child.

Please note: The parking lot will be closed during this time to ensure safety to all our little chicks!
